12PM – 2PM ED STEPHENSON & FLAMENCO DANCE
Ed Stephenson is a classical/nuevo flamenco guitarist who has toured throughout North America since he was sixteen. He is also the founder of the Paco Pand and the North Carolina Guitar Quartet. Ed’s most recent recording, Esencia, is craftily blended to deliver a new dimension of Nuevo flamenco music. Roger Cope of The Classical Voice of North Carolina says “The ensemble is tight with rhythmically biting and often infectious enthusiasm.” Ed is the head of the guitar department of Meredith College in Raleigh. He has also held faculty positions at Methodist University in Fayetteville and Mt. Olive College.
4:30PM – 6PM BARROWBURN
Barrowburn presents traditional Celtic music on acoustic instruments They are equally at home ripping through a set of jigs or reels as they are rendering the simple beauty of a slow air or lament. Performing both legacy and contemporary ballads from the tradition as well as comical pub songs that are best accompanied by a swinging pint of Guinness, Barrowburn demonstrate their love for Celtic music from an American perspective.
6:30PM – 8PM MARIA ELENA VALDEZ, “LA REINA DEL MARIACHI”
Maria Elena Valdez is a premier singer of Mexican music. She has been playing mariachi from the age of four, taking the music of her Mexican land as an inspiration. The music is the symbol of joy and at the same time it comforts us in moments of sadness and melancholy. For two years now, under the name “La Reina Del Mariachi”, she has been spreading the same love she feel for her Mexican music to reach the new generations. As Maria Elena says in her presentations: when she sings, she gives her heart.
8:30PM – 10PM CRUCIAL FIYA
This multifaceted Reggae band has the capability of performing for the most serious Rastafarian music listener, or those in need of a good time with a Caribbean flavor. Ralph “Ras” DuJour is the heartbeat that pumps the blood through Crucial Fiya. DuJour is of American Haitian descent and is the leader of this multifaceted Reggae band. The core of Reggae is the heartbeat of Crucial Fiya. “Crucial” meaning extremely important, and “Fiya” is a Reggae/Caribbean idiom that denotes fire and more specifically, fire to burn out the wickedness that persists in the world.
