Kosovo: The Rule of Law and Effective Victim Advocacy in the Criminal Justice System
by Tugce Tumer and Leila Bekri
International Focus welcomed an IVLP delegation made up of a judge, a prosecutor, and a victim advocate from Kosovo to the Triangle area. As part of the program, which centered on victims’ rights and advocacy in the justice system, the delegates met with local non-profit organizations as well as with professionals in the North Carolina justice system where they engaged in roundtable discussions, in-person visits, and courtroom observations. The delegation learned about the services provided to victims in the Research Triangle area, especially in cases of sexual assault, domestic violence and human trafficking. In many of the meetings the participants voiced how impressed they were by the number of long-term services offered to victims after legal proceedings have been concluded, and how they hope to implement systems such as these in Kosovo. International Focus looks forward to seeing the positive impact that these delegates will have on victims’ services in Kosovo.
