Culture is the catalyst for our social, spiritual and political transformation. It is the roadmap to the liberation already living in our bones. Since 1999 SpiritHouse has used Culture, Practice, and Ritual (C.P.R.) to amplify the truths, trials, and transformations of our communities. For the past 20 years, this C.P.R. has saved our lives.
As we look towards our bright future, we want to share our insights, celebrate our accomplishments, and begin manifesting our visions with you, at our first annual For The Culture Weekend. Please join us in our hometown of Durham North Carolina. We can’t wait to see you!
Friday, October 25th – 6pm – Community Sing
“We need practices that uplift the spirit and grows our sense of our collective power to participate in collective struggle.” – Wendi Moore-O’Neal
Wendi uses story circles and song sharing, learned from her family of movement veterans, as tools for growing inspiration and building a democratic process. Join us as we practice joy and liberation through song. No experience is necessary in order to be a participant in this cultural practice. Just come with a willingness to join in the chorus.

As Black people in America, we carry generational biologically inherited trauma and freedom in our bones. We, therefore, prioritize our collective need to give and receive deep transformative healing, that is rooted in our customs, rituals, resilience, radical imagination and true historical analysis.

Sunday, October 27th – 10:00am – 1:00pm – Capoeira Angola Roda
Join us for the very first community roda held at Northstar Church of the Arts led by the Durham Capoeira Angoleirx Group! Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics, and music. It was developed by enslaved Africans in Brazil at the beginning of the 16th century. A roda is an important part of capoeira culture. It is an energizing spirit-lifting community gathering where folks come to play capoeira, sing, connect, share food and learn more about this important Black movement tradition.
