Dance Performance From:

The Sanskrit word Leela means the effortless play between the Sublime and the physical world. A thing of Beauty and Power. It is the Sublime bliss that inspires creation.

Leela is all this and more in Indian classical dance, where dance is a personal form of prayer. Where the dancer is virtually inseparable from the dance as the body is trained to become one with the mind and spirit to create the Sublime Bliss they call Rasa. This is the ultimate goal and purpose of art.

At Leela they nurture and inspire young dancers to reach these heights in their dance. They strive to create the environment for them to develop discipline, dedication and passion for their art. This is achieved through a holistic education that combines in-depth instruction in the practice of Bharata Natyam with applicable theory. With a well balanced curriculum students advance from learning the rudiments of movements called adavus to simple and complex dance pieces that form the Bharata Natyam repertoire.

Dancers are meticulously guided through all areas of dance instruction for them to acquire proper body alignment, posture, coordination, rhythm, balance, strength and flexibility. In addition, opportunities to perform develop self-confidence, poise and self-assurance.

Dance Performance From:

On December 2014, Takiri Folclor Latino solidified and took shape as a Latino family sharing values, culture, enjoyment through the dance, and dances from all Latin America.

Takiri in Quechua language means “Who creates music and dance.” The purpose of the group is to showcase Latin American culture through dance. They are a Latino family where our members range from age 3 to older adults and represent various countries, including Colombia, Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras, Perú, Ecuador, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, United States and France.

They dance rhythms from Latin America, especially from Colombia, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, México, Perú and Guatemala. These include Cumbia, Bambuco, Mapalé, Plena and others. The majority of their dances have African, European and Indigenous influence, the African influence in the basic rhythm, the European influence in the wording and the dresses, and the Indigenous influence in the melody and the dance.

Dance Performance From:

The Folklore and Dance group was born to contribute to the mission of the Venezuelan Cultural Association of North Carolina (ACVNC), which is a non-profit organization with 20 years of participation in cultural events. ACVNC Folklore & Dance group’s mission is to “preserve and share Venezuelan cultural values through music and folkloric dances”. The Folklore & Dance group and ACVNC are honored to represent the rich Venezuelan culture and maintain strong bonds within Venezuelan families.

Their dance group started performing in 2018; however, several members of this group have been participating in dancing cultural events for more than 16 years. The Venezuelan Cultural Association formed this group with the intention of including dance performances in all of the events they organize.

Since 2018, the Folklore & Dance Group has performed in approximately 8-10 events per year, from Public School presentations to larger events as La Fiesta del Pueblo and Ritmo Latino in 2019. This group also performed in the ACVNC annual Christmas events of 2018 and 2019 in Durham, in the annual event ‘Atardecer Llanero’ in Spring of 2018 and 2019 in Graham, and in the ‘150 City of Durham Anniversary’ in the Durham Arts Council theater.
